Kalonji—Tengra/ Kalojeera – Tengra/Tengra Fish With Nigella Seeds

Today I am posting a simple and delicious fish gravy recipe made with Tengra Fish. It is a traditional Bengali recipe and very quick and easy to prepare. It is a little spicy dish and very tasty to eat. It goes well with steamed rice.

Cooking time – 30 minutes.  Serve – 4

Ingredients –

  1. Fish – 300 grams.
  2. ginger (grated) – 1 tsp.
  3. Garlic cloves – 4
  4. Nigella seeds – 1 tbsp.
  5. Green chilly 4
  6. Tomato – 1
  7. Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp.
  8. Salt to taste.
  9. Oil -1/2 cup.

Instructions –

Wash the fish with lukewarm water, marinate with 1/2 tsp.of salt and a pinch of turmeric powder. Keep aside until use. Grind ginger and garlic into a paste, keep aside. Dry roast the Nigella seeds for few seconds and grind into a powder. By using 1/2 cup of water grind Nigella seed powder,tomato and green chilly into a smooth paste. Keep aside.

Heat oil in a frying pan. Group the fishes into 3 batches. Fry each batch till light brown on both sides. Keep the fried fish aside. Add ginger-garlic paste in the remaining oil. Saute for 2 minutes. Add turmeric powder and nigella paste.  Saute for 30 seconds. Add 2 cups of water and little salt. Allow to boil. Add the fried fish, cover and cook for 5 to 7 minutes(stir in between). When the gravy starts thickening, remove pan from the heat. Cover and give 10 minutes standing time.

Delicious Bengali dish—Kalonji Tengra is ready—-serve with steamed rice.
