Bacha Fish With Eggplant

Today I am sharing with you a fish gravy recipe made with Bacha fish and eggplant. It is a traditional Bengali recipe and very popular in West Bengal and Bangladesh. It is a simple recipe but very tasty to eat and very quick and easy to prepare. It goes well with steamed Rice.

Cooking time – 40 minutes.  Serve – 4.

Ingredients –

1.Fish – 250 grams.(cleaned and washed)

2.Eggplant (medium) – 1 (cut into long pieces)

3.Tomato – 1 (chopped)

4.Onion – 1 (finely chopped)

5.Ginger paste – 1/4 tsp.

6.Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp.

7.Red chilly powder – 1/2 tsp.

8.Cumin powder – 1/2 tsp. Bay leaf – 1

9.Salt to taste.

10.Oil – 6 tbsp.

11.Slit green chilly and chopped coriander leaves (for garnishing)

Instructions –

1.Marinate fish with 1/4 tsp.of salt and a pinch of turmeric powder,keep aside until use. Soak eggplant pieces in a bowl of water for 10 minutes and drain.

2.Heat oil in a frying pan, when hot reduce the heat. Add the fish and fry till light brown on both sides. Take out the fried fish from the oil, keep aside. Add the eggplant pieces in the remaining oil and fry lightly. Take out the eggplant from the oil, keep aside.

3.Add cumin seeds and bay leaf in the remaining oil (add 2 tbsp.of oil if needed). When the cumin looks brown,add chopped onion and fry till light brown. Add chopped tomato and saute for 1 minute on medium heat. Add turmeric,red chilly, cumin powder,ginger paste and 1/2 cup of water. Mix well. Saute on slow heat toll oil separates. Add 1 to 1+1/2 cups of water,let it bring to boil. Add fried fish,eggplant and salt. Mix well. Cook for 4 to 6 minutes. When the gravy starts thickening, remove pan from the heat. Add slit green chilly and coriander leaves. Cover the pan,give 10 minutes standing time.

Delicious Bengali Fish preparation – Bacha Fish Gravy is ready, serve with steamed Rice.
