Bele Fish With Mustard Seeds Paste/Bele Macher Jhal

Today I am sharing a delicious fish gravy recipe made with Bele Mach. It is a traditional Bengali recipe and very popular in West Bengal and Bangladesh. It is a tasty dish,very quick and easy to prepare and with few ingredients. It goes well with steamed rice.

Cooking time – 20 minutes.  Serve – 4

Ingredients –

  1. Bele fish – 4 nos.
  2. Nigella seeds (kalonji) – 1/2 tsp.
  3. Tomato – 1 (chopped)
  4. Garlic clove – 4
  5. Green chilly – 2
  6. Slit green chilly – 4
  7. Mustard seeds – 4 tbsp.
  8. Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp.
  9. Oil – 1/2 cup.
  10. Chopped coriander leaves – 4 tbsp.

Instructions –

By adding 1/2 cup of water grind mustard seeds,garlic,tomato and 2 green chilly into a paste. Cover it,keep aside.

Clean and wash the fish well, marinate with 1/4 tsp.of salt and a pinch of turmeric powder. Heat oil in a frying pan,when it is hot reduce the heat. Add the fish and fry till light brown on both sides. Take out the fried fish from the oil ,keep aside.

Add kalonji in the remaining oil and fry for 30 seconds. Add the mustard seeds paste and turmeric powder. Saute till oil separates. Add 3 to4 cups of water, let it brings to boil. Add  the fried fish,salt and slit green chilly. Cover the pan and cook over medium heat for 5 to 7 minutes (stir in between). When the gravy starts thickening, remove pan from the heat.

Add chopped coriander leaves, cover the pan and give 10 minutes standing time.

Delicious Bele Macher Jhal is ready, serve with hot plain rice.
