Bihari Aloo Chokha (In Bengali Style)

Today I am posting a delicious side dish recipe from Bihari cuisines – it is Aloo Chokha recipe. It is very famous in the states of Bihar and Jharkhand. It is a simple recipe, very quick and easy to prepare and with few ingredients. I have made Aloo Chokha in Bengali style. It can be served with Roti/Paratha or Rice and Dal. You can prepare different types of snacks with Aloo Chokha , like Chops,Cutlets and Aloo Paratha. Add little roasted masala or garam masala and make these delicious snacks.

Cooking time –  35 minutes.  Served – 4

Ingredients –

  1. Potato – 400 grams.
  2. Dry red chilly – 1
  3. Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp.
  4. Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp.
  5. Onion (large) – 1 (finely chopped)
  6. Garlic cloves – 4(finely chopped)
  7. Green chilly – 2 (chopped)
  8. Salt to taste
  9. Sugar – a pinch.
  10. Oil – 3 tbsp.
  11. Pepper powder – 1/2 tsp.
  12. Lemon juice – 1 tsp.

Instructions –

Wash and pressure cook the potatoes (with skins) till soft. Put the potatoes in a colander, allow to cool. Peel the skins off. Using a potato grater grate them. You can mash them with hand also. Keep the mashed potato aside.

Heat 3 tbsp.of oil in a frying pan, add dry red chilly and cumin seeds and stir. When the cumin looks brown add mustard seeds. When splutters add onion and garlic, fry for 1 minute. Add the mashed potato, salt,sugar and chopped green chilly. Mix all the ingredients properly. Cook on slow heat for 5 to 6 minutes with stirring continuously.

Remove pan from the heat, mix pepper powder and lemon juice. Delicious Aloo Chokha is ready to serve. Garnish with green chilly. Enjoy.
