Hilsa (Ilish) Fish Cooked In Banana Leaf.

Today I am posting a delicious recipe of Hilsa fish. It is Hilsa fish in banana leaf. It is a traditional Bengali recipe and very popular dish throughout Bengal and Bangladesh. It is a simple recipe, delicious and takes few minutes to prepare. It can be made in various way – in a pan/pressure cooker or microwave. It goes well with plain steamed rice. I have made the dish in pressure cooker.

Cooking time – 7 to 8 minutes.   Serve – 4.

Ingredients –

1.Fish piece – 4 nos.

2.Mustard seeds – 2 tbsp.

3.Poppy seeds – 2 tbsp.

4.Shredded coconut – 4 tbsp.

5.Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp.

6.Green chilly – 2.

7.Slit green chilly – 4.

8.Salt to taste.

9.Sugar – a pinch.

10.Mustard oil – 4 tbsp.

And banana leaf – 1 (large)

Instructions –

1.Cut the banana leaf into square pieces (4 nos.). Wash the pieces and wipe. Grease the pieces with mustard oil, keep aside.

2.Wash the fish pieces and marinate with 1/4 tsp.of salt and a pinch of turmeric powder. Keep aside until use. By adding little water grind mustard seeds and 2 green chilly into a sooth paste. Again grind poppy seeds with little water into a paste. Add coconut to the poppy seeds paste and grind again into a smooth paste. Put all the paste in a large bowl. To this add salt,sugar,turmeric powder and 4 tbsp.of mustard oil. Mix all the ingredients properly. The mixture should be dry. Coat each piece of fish with the mixture. Place one fish and one slit green chilly on each portion of banana leaf. Cover four sides of leaf to make a packet and tie with thread.

3.Pour 1+1/2 cup of water in pressure cooker. Place a small metal utensil (steel glass/bowl) in it. Put grid on the metal utensil. Now arrange the fish packets on the grid. Close the cooker and cook in medium flame for 7 to 8 minutes (or up to one whistle).

Remove the cooker from the heat. Allow it to cool for 10 minutes. Release the pressure (if required). Open the cooker, place the fish packets on serving dish.

Delicious Hilsa Fish in banana leaves is ready,serve with hot plain rice.
